“Cotswolds After Dark” is an Autumn/Winter 2021/22 Menswear and Accessories woven fabric collection. This thought-provoking collection offers bold designs that are focused around escapism from depression and anxiety by using inclusive design. With rates of depression and anxiety in the UK running high with 1 in 4 people experiencing a mental health problem each year according to Mind.org, Depression and anxiety in men often gets overlooked as many of them find it difficult to talk about their feelings, which is why it is more important than ever to get men talking.
The key component for the final collection was to combine the heritage of tweed with bold patterned designs by mixing mottled wool yarns with contemporary colours and innovative yarns such as glow in the dark and reflective yarn which offer a sense of escapism by adding in a digital technology element.
The primary design inspiration was from road markings because of the bold contrasting colours and patterns. To communicate this across in the design process, techniques such as cutwork, collaging and layering were used to help explore placement ideas for the final design collection. Research into the UN Sustainable Development Goal 3, ‘Good Health and Well-being’, and Goal 12, “Responsible Consumption and Production” all ensured that the final collection achieved a sustainable, inclusive design outcome.
