For my final major project I have aimed to showcase my passion for drawing with techniques such as etching or pointillism.
The present worry surrounding the matter of climate change and dominance of industrial-like landscapes has led my work to search for a more intense appreciation and connection with the natural world. The presented work not only aims to communicate the nostalgia and beauty of nature but it has also been a way of expressing my own anxiety towards living in an industrial, cosmopolitan yet alienating city.
The initial research that has introduced this project is of the diverse representations found in Medieval and Romanesque architecture (From the 11th to the 13th century in Catalunya, Spain) of religious and mystical tradition, together with Alchemic illustrations of the 12th century. These illustrations represent exciting and alternative ways of understanding forms and processes of nature. Colours such as Burgundy, Brick Red, Cerulean blue ,and so on have been extracted from these images and photographs to create a colour palette.
Another element of inquiry for this project has been the diverse ways in which cultures have represented the Tree of Life and other elements found in nature that have a symbolic meaning related to our spiritual existence.
Initially my pieces were going to be screen printed on fabric but do to Covid-19 and not being able to access the facilities I had to make my project much more digitally friendly. This has allowed me to be more experimental with colour and scale. I have designed this collection for an interior design context.
