When selecting fabrics for interior spaces, understanding the fabric structure and durability is essential. The first three fundamental terms we'll cover are: warp & weft, selvedge, and rub count - let’s break them down.

Warp & Weft: The Building Blocks of Woven Fabrics

All woven fabrics are made using two sets of threads:

-Warp: These threads run vertically (lengthwise) along the loom and provide structure and strength.

-Weft: These threads run horizontally (widthwise) and are woven in and out of the warp threads.

The way warp and weft threads interlace determines the fabric’s pattern, texture, and durability. In interior applications, warp threads are typically stronger since they endure the most tension during weaving. This makes warp direction crucial for upholstery and drapery, where durability is a priority.

Selvedge: The Fabric’s Finished Edge

The selvedge is the tightly woven edge that runs along both sides of a fabric roll. It prevents fraying and is often used to help with pattern alignment during upholstery or drapery projects. High-end textile manufacturers sometimes incorporate branding or decorative elements into the selvedge, making it a design feature in its own right.

When working with patterned textiles, paying attention to the selvedge ensures accurate fabric positioning. Cutting too close to or using the selvedge in a seam may affect the fabric's drape or appearance.

Rub Count: Measuring Fabric Durability

A key factor in fabric selection, especially for upholstery, is rub count, which measures abrasion resistance. The two most common testing methods are:

-Martindale Test: Uses a circular motion to simulate wear.

-Wyzenbeek Test: Uses a back-and-forth motion to assess durability.

Rub Count Guide:

-10,000–20,000 rubs – Light-use fabrics (curtains, decorative cushions)

-20,000–40,000 rubs – General residential upholstery

-50,000+ rubs – Heavy-duty commercial upholstery

Choosing the right rub count ensures longevity and suitability for different spaces, from delicate draperies to high-traffic seating.
